「GUO YINGGUANG」presents a new body of works by Yingguang Guo after her matchmaking corner performance/image series The Bliss of Conformity stirred up drastic discussions in the public sphere. Since 2018, Guo has been experimenting with media and concepts to embody the ambiguous moments of being the target of public opinions toward female identity. She was regarded as the voice of feminism, exposed to the contradictory identities endorsed by the Internet. More directly and dramatically, she’s been receiving count- less e-courtship letters from strange men around the globe. An intermedium of becoming and anti-becoming a woman, 「GUO YINGGUANG」incarnates the artist’s search for answers to the question: Who exactly am I (is the female) under the layered facade of multiple identities?

Combining sculpture, installation, video and photography, the exhibition builds an eerie and mysterious stage to explore the ongoing self-creation of the female under social sanction, and to present the tension between dream and violence. This is Yingguang Guo’s first solo exhibition after her last one at Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, 2019.
